What is the Chat Module?

The Chat module is your organisation's built-in messaging hub. It lets teams communicate in real time through organised channels — no need to switch between external apps. Whether you want to coordinate daily tasks, share updates across departments, or have a quick conversation with a colleague, Chat keeps everything in one place.

What You Can Do

  • Create channels to organise conversations by team, topic, or project

  • Send messages in real time and see responses as they happen

  • @mention people and roles to get the right person's attention

  • Pin important messages so they are easy to find later

  • Share files and images directly in the conversation

  • Control who can access each channel with role-based and user-level permissions

Key Concepts

Channels

A channel is a dedicated space for a specific conversation. You might create a channel for each team, project, or topic. All messages in a channel are visible to everyone who has access, making it easy to keep discussions organised and searchable.

Messages

Messages are the core of Chat. You can send text, attach files, and mention people. Messages appear in real time for everyone in the channel, with typing indicators showing when someone is composing a reply.

@Mentions

Use the @ symbol to tag specific people, entire job roles, or @everyone in a channel. Mentioned users receive a notification, even if they have muted the channel for general messages.

Pinned Messages

Any message in a channel can be pinned to keep it visible. Pinned messages appear in a dedicated list in the channel info panel, making it easy to find important announcements, links, or decisions without scrolling through history.

Notifications

Each channel has notification preferences you can set individually. Choose to be notified about all messages, only when you are mentioned, or mute the channel entirely. This lets you stay focused while still being reachable when it matters.

High-Level Workflow

  1. Create a channel

  2. Invite members (via job roles or user overrides)

  3. Send and receive messages

  4. @mention people for their attention

  5. Pin important messages for quick reference

  6. Manage channel settings as needed

Who Can Use the Chat Module

Access to the Chat module is controlled by permissions assigned to each user's role. There are several permission areas:

Permission Area

What It Controls

Channel permissions

Viewing channels, creating new channels

Message permissions

Editing and deleting messages

Channel management

Changing channel settings, archiving, deleting

Permission management

Configuring who can access each channel

Note: Viewing channels and messages requires at minimum the communication:channels:read permission. Creating channels requires communication:channels:create. Managing channel settings and permissions requires additional management permissions.

Where to Find the Chat Module

The Chat module is accessible from the main navigation sidebar under Chat (or Pokalbiai in Lithuanian). It opens a three-panel layout:

  • Channel list (left) — browse and search your channels

  • Message area (centre) — read and send messages in the selected channel

  • Channel info (right) — view channel details, members, and pinned messages
