Creating a Channel
Open Chat from the sidebar.
Click the Create Channel button (or the + icon) at the top of the channel list.
Enter a channel name (required, up to 100 characters). Choose something descriptive — e.g. "Kitchen Team", "Weekly Updates", or "Marketing".
Optionally add a description (up to 500 characters) to explain the channel's purpose.
Click Create.
The new channel appears in the channel list immediately and is ready to use. You can start sending messages straight away.
Tip: A clear channel name and description help team members find the right channel quickly. You can always edit these later.
The Channel List
The channel list appears on the left side of the Chat page. It shows all channels you have access to, sorted by most recent activity.
Each channel in the list displays:
Channel avatar — a coloured icon with the channel's initial, or a custom image if one has been uploaded
Channel name
Last message preview — a short snippet of the most recent message
Timestamp — when the last message was sent
Unread badge — a count of messages you have not yet seen
Searching Channels
Use the search bar at the top of the channel list to filter channels by name. As you type, the list updates to show only matching channels.
Editing a Channel
To change a channel's name, description, or avatar:
Open the channel you want to edit.
Click the channel name or the settings icon in the channel header to open Channel Settings.
Make your changes:
Name — click the edit icon next to the channel name
Description — click the edit icon next to the description
Avatar — click Upload avatar to upload a custom image, or Remove to go back to the default
Click Save changes.
Note: Editing a channel requires the communication:channels:manage permission. Avatar images must be under 5 MB.
Read-Only Mode
Read-only mode restricts a channel so that only managers can post messages. Other members can still read the conversation, but the message input is disabled for them.
To enable or disable read-only mode:
Open Channel Settings for the channel.
Toggle the Read-only mode switch.
Click Save changes.
Read-only mode is useful for announcement channels where only leadership should post, but everyone needs to see the updates.
Archiving and Unarchiving Channels
Archiving removes a channel from the active list without deleting it. All messages are preserved and can be restored later.
To archive a channel
Open Channel Settings.
Click Archive channel.
Confirm the action.
To unarchive a channel
Find the archived channel (it may still appear in search results or be accessible via a direct link).
Open Channel Settings.
Click Unarchive channel.
Confirm the action.
The channel returns to the active list and members can resume messaging.
Deleting a Channel
Deleting a channel permanently removes it and all of its messages. This action cannot be undone.
Open Channel Settings.
Scroll to the Danger Zone section.
Click Delete channel.
Read the confirmation warning and click Delete to confirm.
Warning: Deleting a channel is irreversible. All messages, pinned messages, and file attachments in the channel will be permanently lost. Consider archiving instead if you may need the conversation history later.
